iThe Story of the Cigar
"He twirled a gay guitar He smoked the sweetest cigar. He lay in the grass With the head of the class And left her all ajar."
M.L. Rosenthal, Blue Boy on Skates
igar-smoking has always had a mystique, an air of panache and style. Today this is is as strong as it has ever been, with cigar bars and glossy cigar magazines attracting new cigar-smokers of both sexes worldwide to the pleasure of smoking a good, big cigar.
The Spanish were the first Europeans to sample this delight. The day Christopher Columbus first landed in Cuba, 28 October 1492, he noted in his log that the local Indians, both male and female, smoked a "lighted brand from which they inhaled."
History shows that Indians in Central America and the Caribbean had been enjoying these forerunners of the modern cigar long before Columbus arrived.
