introduction
The Mediterranean Sea is part of the Atlantic Ocean and covers a huge area almost completely enclosed by land, with Europe to the north, Africa to the south, and Asia to the east. Countries bordering the sea include Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco.
The many positive health aspects of what has come to be known as 'the Mediterranean diet' have been widely recognized in recent years. The warm, sunny climate and miles of coastal waters enjoyed by the Mediterranean countries provide a diet that is rich in seafood, with only limited amounts of meat and dairy products, and
a stunning range of colorful, nutrition-packed fruits and vegetables. Plenty of olive oil, with its heart-protective properties, completes the picture of a way of eating that promotes an enviably long and healthy life.
