IntroductionI have never been successful in resisting beautiful threads, yarns, and cords that have delicious colors and textures. Beads of all shapes and sizes; brass trinkets in any form; splendid wools, old and new; these are things I cannot walk past without handling and inevitably purchasing. These fascinating finds should not sit unused forever. The question is, "What do I do with all these treasures other than take them out once in a while and stare?" I am certain that I am not alone with this wonderful frustration. In my mind, I see paintings, piUows, wall hangings, and lots of other stuff. In this book, I want to share with you some of my creations. I would like to inspire you to find a great design to use with your treasures. Consider textures and colors in the things that you have, combinations you can create with a streak of this and a snip of that, adding threads to simulate bark, veins in a leaf, stones in a path, a starry night. What about all those scraps of copper and tin, litde embellishments found in the craft stores that are to be used for one thing but you think would work on something else?In this book the technique of apphqué is used a great deal. It is perhaps not the typical appliqué that one thinks of on beautiful quilts and clothing but it is a form of appliqué. Appliqué is one of the simplest and oldest ways to decorate cloth. Like patchwork appliqué was originally used to cover worn or damaged areas in a garment or other useful item. The sewer became clever in turning a disadvantage into an ornamental accent very quickly, thus the art of appliqué began.l'I.
