IntroductionThe Central Statistical Office conducted its last way of life and time use survey (also connected to the international time use survey initiated by EUROSTAT) in 1999/2000. This current publication presents the characteristics of annual time use on the basis of this survey, but there have already been two detailed analyses and data compilations published that used the same source. One volume' gave a comprehensive picture about the autumn period, while the other^ presented the changes in the time spent on part-time agricultural work.The latest survey began on September 1st 1999 and ended on September 6th 2000. The selection of households and persons was done on the basis of the sample of the annual micro-census of 1996, extending to nearly 11 thousand households. In order to have the seasons and the days of the week represented proportionally, we conducted the annual time budget survey in four periods of equal duration.Preceding this, a survey spanning the whole year was conducted in 1986/1987. The methods and sample size of this were also fundamentally similar to the latest survey, thus offering an opportunity for a comparison spanning close to one and a half decades.For several activities the annual figures give a more accurate picture about the characteristics of time use than those about one given period. The differences are well perceivable if we compare the respective autumn and annual figures. When putting together the volume it was an important consideration to follow the main structure that had been formed in the publication of the autumn figures.Along these lines (concerning the population aged 15-74) we again provide a comprehensive picture on the one hand about the macro-level accounting of work activities. On the other hand, based on traditional indices we present the changes in the main features of time use measured on an individual level. Compared to the previous studies, characterising time management by quintiles can be considered a new way of presenting data. Our aim with this was to present the time use of groups with different levels of work load more tangibly. Furthermore, we also aimed to describe the socio-demographic composition of people belonging to the different quintiles.Data publications describing the time use of the population follow a unified international practice, which usually focuses on the daily average time spent on different activities.
