PÉCS, the capital of Baranya county, lies 200 kilometres south of Budapest, close to the Danube and Drava rivers. It is situated on rising ground at the southem foot of the Mecsek Hills. Today its inhabitants number 170,000, and its rapid growth over the past decades has made it one of the country's largest cities.
