Introduction 1VÖÖ marks the 50th year since the establishment of Tallinn Technical University. Founded during the bourgeois period in 1936, the University was accommodated in the administrative building of the former Russian-Baltic Ship Building Plánt on Kopli Peninsula. Those premises acted as the University's main building for more than thirty years. The new stage in the history of the University began with the re-establishment of Soviet power in Estonia in 1940. As the peaceful constructive work was interrupted by the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War, the beginning of the rapid development of the University coincides with the expulsion of Germán occupants in 1944 and the end of the World War II in the following spring. In the bourgeois period only 24 engineers obtained a higher education at the University. By 1950 the number of students had increased to 2,075. In addition to the main building, somé other buildings at Kopli were alsó taken into use, housing the faculties of chemical engineering, thermal power engineering and chemical technology. The faculty of economics moved to Toompea, the oldest part of Tallinn. The rapidly developing national economy required more and more specialists with up-to-date education; it needed specialists in new fields of technics. Therefore separate faculties were opened for training power and automation engineers. The choice of specialities in other faculties was reorganized to meet the demands of the day. The evening and correspondence departments expanded. By 1960 the number of students had grown to 3,978. The problem of a campus became extremely topicai at the end of the 1950s. The territory for the new campus was found at Mustamáe, a new housing development of Tallinn, where the corner-stone was Thanks to the care of the Party and the government and to the good cooperation between the leaders of the University and the designers, the erection of the ensemble of buildings proceeded successfully. In the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s the premises of four faculties, a rectorate, an assembly hall, a library and other necessary rooms were completed, forming one single building, the main building at present. In addition, the University got three hostels, a sports complex and many auxiliary buildings. The faculty of power engineering moved to its own building in Kalinin Street. The sports and recreation centre at Klooga took its present shape. At present, on the eve of the 50th anniversary, when the number of the students has been about 10,000 for years and the technical apparatus has multiplied, the University is building again. The 1980s are marked by the completion of the Computing Centre, the sixth study building, the first part of the house of research laboratories. By now more than 29,000 engineers and economists have graduated from Tallinn Technical University. The majority of the graduates have spent a merry and industrious time as students. The album presents somé aspects of the life of the University. The University is grateful to former students and workers who have made their contribution to the development of the higher technical school of our republic. The University is ready to admit new applicants of the growing generation who will have to guarantee the steady development of our technology and national economy and the consistency of technical education in the future. laid in 1962.
