Preface
In previous wars against Israel the Arabs have always lost. The absolute military superiority of the Israelis has been for decades one of the few stable values that could be relied on in the Middle East. Suddenly on the 6th of October 1973 and with unaccustomed strength the Egyptians succeeded in crossing the Suez Canal and taking the Bar Lev Line.
"The Great Crossing" had an importance for the Egyptians which can scarcely be overestimated. Its effects will be described here. An answer will be found to the question: "How did the Egyptians do it?" What the Egyptians have to say about it will be reproduced on the following pages. The new spirit of Egypt will be felt in the small things of human existence. That spirit, generated by "the military victory of the October War", was the prerequisite which enabled an Arabian country - Egypt - to recognise the existence of Israel and to strive for peace.
Naturally such a report is not comprehensive, but as much as possible has been included. My thanks are due
