WELCOME TO FLORENCE!You are about to explore this world-famous and seductive Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance town, that has been sung by poets and lovers of beauty through the centuries. Successive building and alterations have not managed to disrupt the harmonious fabric of this town lovingly put together by laborious merchants and artists. City of the Lily, Birthplace of Dante, Cradle ofthe Renaissance, Town of the Medici: you will discover the many-coloured marble fagades of numberless Romanesque and Gothic churches, the treasures in the museums, the chiselled, gilded or frescoed ceilings of the great halls in Palazzo Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti or Palazzo Strozzi, the austere grandeur of Fiorentine civic architecture. You will be entranced by the warm amber colours of the weathered sandstone (pietra forte) and of the terracotta, which give the whole town its lion-tawny tinge. You will wander along the alleys which stili keep to the lines laid down by the old Roman "castrum's" founders, back in 59 B.C. and will come out on the Lungarni, to be dazzled by the pearly tints of the river Arno flowing beneath the deep arches ofthe Ponte Vecchio and Ponte Santa Trinita. Once across the bridges, you will be tempted to lean against the high parapets of the Lungarni to absorb the enchanting view of the battle-mented towers and belfries of the old centre, etched dramatically and yet in such a familiar way against the flaming sunset sky.Welcome, and happy wanderings in our company! The Publisher
