PREFACE Americans, who are so fond of reading English and American detective stories, have comparatively little opportunity to read French ones. No apology need therefore be made for offering to American High School and College students this detective story by the author of Mon Oncle et mon Curé. So far as the editor knows, this is the only French detective novel that has been edited in this country for classroom reading. The author, Jean de la Brete, who for so long withheld her identity, has been kind enough to furnish her photograph and a word of greeting especially for this edition of Aimer quand meme. The text that follows is an abridgment of the latest Plon edition. The 311 pages of the latter have been reduced about one fourth, so as to make the story move along more rapidly. Also, the twelve chapters of the original have been rearranged into fourteen divisions better suited to class use. As it now stands, the story will be found to employ a comparatively small vocabulary with the frequent recurrence of many words. It is therefore excellent for the student in the early stages of learning French. While the language is not particularly literary, it is good, easy, contemporary French. Yet, at the same time, the subject matter is of such a nature as to interest the student and not to repel or annoy him as the subject matter of simple texts sometimes does. The Notes have been prepared for students who have not yet progressed very far in their study of French. They are not, however, all-inclusive, as it is the view of the editor that everything that could possibly be included in the Vocabulary should there be explained.
