A Cry for Help
Mihkel woke up with a start. It was a cry for„ help that had woken him. He pushed the blanket aside, sat up in bed and stared at the window. There was no one behind it now. Yet it was only a second ago that he had heard someone calling him. He had seen a horse's head behind the window, had recognized it to be Alfa's and had even wondered why she stood there with her ears laid back as Alfa was a good-tempered horse and usually didn't have that habit.
"Alfie," Mihkel called softly. "What is it, Alfie?"
There was no answer. Only the clock in the next room struck three and Mihkel's big brother Endrik turned over in his bed.
Mihkel then realized that he had been dreaming. He could slip back under the blanket, cuddle up to his pillow and close his eyes. All this he did but the strange, warning anxiety, perhaps even fear, did not disappear. It wouldn't even go away when he pulled the blanket over his head and, after tossing about for some time, fell asleep again.
Generally Mihkel forgot his dreams by the morning but not this time. He remembered everything that had happened in the night. He still felt oppressed with anxiety which, by now, had grown into a foreboding of disaster. Who could tell him the meaning of all this?
Mihkel found no peace anywhere.
