LISBON, THE MUCH PRAISED CITY
Long before Lisbon attained the status of Román municipality in the I century A.D., both Phoenicians and Carthaginians had made their way there. Sited in a truly privileged location on hills and on the banks of the Tagus, whose magnificent estuary it overlooks, the city was inhabited at least 2.500 years before the birth of Christ, as shown by Bronzé Age remains found around the lovely areas where Lisbon now
stands. The great Portuguese poet of the «saudade», Teixeira de Pascoaes, described in enamoured verse the unique situation of the evocative capital of Portugál:
Surge Lisboa, branca, ao pé do Tejo azul;
A Lisboa das naus,
Construida em marfim, sobre colinas de oiro. .
Vede o imenso estuário (é sonho ou realidade?)
Sob um Azul divino a desfo/har-se em asas!
