For a spécifié patient, one must consider the response both of the patient and of the arrhythmia to the drug; the actual plasma concentration of the drug is often of secondary importance. Low drug concentration can exert a thera-peutic or toxic effect in some patients, while drug concentrations higher than the normal range may be needed and tolerated in other patients (1). Douglas P. Bővebb ismertető
Douglas P. Zipes, M.D. It is difficult to imagine a statement that would better illustrate the complexity of treating dysrhythmia. In addition to considering the responses of both the patient and the arrhythmia to any given drug, one must also consider the type and severity of arrhythmia. Thus, it is not surprising that so much attention and effort have been devoted to developing different classes of antiarrhythmic médication as well as interventional procedures. During the past two decades, each newly developed drug, as well as different indications for already existing médications, has led to major clinical trials that have greatly helped in the treatment of patients suffering from dysrhythmia. Nonetheless, the specific indications, dosages, and combination therapies remain very complex. This book brings together in one volume the results of the most influential clinical trials. Each is discussed by an expert on the specific médication under study. This compilation of the major studies of antiarrhythmic agents is designed to assist those involved in the care of patients with arrhythmia. But, in addition, it also poses challenges to the biomédical community engaged in research in this area. The roster of editors and authors who contributed to this volume is a list of "Who's Who" in the field. A great deal of research has been conducted in the past, and much is now under way. Fortunately, it is successful and therefore very valuable research. However, its true value comes only from its application and use in clinical practice. This volume facilitâtes this translation from the bench to the bedside. Claude Lenfant, M.D. Bethesda, Maryland
