Dear Reader! Established 162 years ago, the Hungárián Defense Forces (HDF) safeguard the security of our country, while building on their traditions to develop their capabilities and carry out their missions as specified in the Constitution. Over the past four years national defense has been characterized by a national consensus and the development of cooperation as well as by widespread public support. The most important laws, decisions and resolutions were supported by all the parliamentary parties and received a significant degree of backing from the public. I consider it an outstanding achievement that the citizens of Hungary know and appreciate the Hungárián Defense Forces, the troops who serve in the interest of our homeland security. The forces that we have set up over the past years are ready to protect the national security interests of the Republic of Hungary and fulfill their commitments arising from the collective defense tasks specified in international agreements. The Hungárián Defense Forces have been upgraded, so that the modern, all-volunteer, professional miIitary we have created serves the defense of the homeland and is able to carry out its missions in NATO on a high level. Our commitments are realistic and viable, as they are in harmony with the economic capacity of Hungary. Today the Hungárián Defense Forces possess a stable structure with a modern and effective chain of command on which we can safely build in the coming years. It is especially important that the HDF troop units and the international missions are given priority in the development of the HDF. Our troops are performing their tours of duty in 14 countries on three continents, and this commitment puts our country among the top NATO member states. The stability of our military enabled the government to adopt the National Military Strategy in 2009 after a period of widescope public consultations. The HDF have been streamlined, while simultaneously became more transparent and have been reorganized according to unified principles. Today effectiveness, transparency and traceability, along with the application of modern planning and management methods are fundamental requirements for any well-functioning organization. The recent work done by the Ministry of Defense to attain these goals has resulted in a strengthened structure of the HDF units and missions.
