-I—iach time I have reason to write about Bonnard I feel a strange mixture of hesitation and pleasure, without being sure which is uppermost. At first glance it seems that Bonnard needs to be explained less than any other painter, because one experiences his work with the exuberance of an encounter with something which captivates one without the need for analysis. What is there to say, except to advise one's readers to yield to his magic?
