BUCHAREST IN
BRIEF
Bucharest, the capital city of the Socialist Republic of Romania, is situated in a region known for its fertility. The city lies at about an equal distance from the sub-Carpathian hills and the Danube, in the area where Arges river and its tributaries make up a dense network of rivers and where in the old times there stretched the Vlasia forest. It is traversed from North-West to South-East by the river Dimbovita and its tributary, Colentina, that have an almost parallel course. Dimbovita, most of which has been turned into a sewerage system, divides the city in nearly two equal parts. Bucharest has the following geographic coordinates: 44°24'31" Lat. N. and 26°06'44" Long. E.
The city's territory, covering an area of 970 sq. km., is divided into eight administrative districts. The city and its outlying areas have a moderate continental climate, with an annual average temperature of 10°—11° C. Winters usually begin in mid-November and last until the middle of March; springs are short, the transition to summers is quite sudden while autumns are usually long and pleasant. The large number of parks and lakes lend particular picturesqueness to the city, especially during the warm seasons.
Archaeological finds attest to the fact that in these places human life has appeared as early as the Palaeolithic Age (The Stone Age). The
