Preface It was in 1971 that the Department of English at the Faculty of Arts of ELTE launched a series of collections of papers, entitled Studies in English and American, the latest issue of which, Vol. 6 was published in 1986. Our department would like to make an open secret of the fact that with the present collection of papers, contributed by the staff members-and alsó a student, Anikó Szécsy-of the Department of English at the Teacher Training College of ELTE, we intend to jóin in and maintain this tradition. This is the reason why we have decided on calling our series College Studies in English and American, or CSEA for short. We hope that we will be able to publish further issues giving a lively sample of the research work at the department on a regular basis and by continuing a tradition to be able to create a tradition of our own. The papers in this issue, which is divided into four sections-Language Pedagogy, Linguistics, Civilization, Literature-cover both English and American topics.
