Introduction This is a Guide to all England in that all the territory has been considered for reportage. However, since a quart cannot be contained within a pint pot, the editor has been obliged to make his choice not so much as to what should be included, but rather what, without prejudice, should be omitted. An honest endeavour nonetheless has been made to include everything of note and of interest to the visitor. The acknowledged tourist regions and visitor movements have been taken into consideration and the Guide has been arranged with these in mind. Thus a visitor to any chosen centre will have on hand references to all the principal places and items of interest within the compass of a walk or drive from that centre. Accommodation in England ranges from luxury hotels to modest bed and breakfast facilities in private houses. The names of some of the principal establishments in various grades, and known to give good service, are noted in the Guide. There are of course very many more and the omission of a name in the lists carries no inference concerning that establishment. Most local authorities issue comprehensive lists of accommodation within their areas and these may be obtained from the Town Clerks or Information Offices concerned. Both the Royal Automobile Club and the Automobile Association issue lists of recommended establishments to their motorist members. During the holiday season accommodation in the main centres and holiday resorts is at a premium and advance reservation is advisable if at all possible.
