EDITORIAL STATEMENT With much disappointment and reluctance, I am stepping down as editor of this great journal. I do so because, beginning in the fali of 2005,1 will be on the faculty in the Department of Criminology at the University of Pennsylvania. This is a singular opportunity for me. Criminology will stay at the University of Maryland under the very capable editorship of Professor Denise Gottfredson, a member of my team of associate editors. My first thanks go to the American Society of Criminology for allowing me to be editor: it has been a great two years. I alsó want to thank my associate editors and the editorial board for their tireless (and generally uncomplaining) effort on my behalf. I sincerely appreciate the labor of all those scholars and friends who did reviews for me, with and without me bugging them. Virtually all the work on the journal over the past two years, I would like in all honesty to point out, has been done by Sarah Bacon, my managing editor, and Nadine Frederique, the assistant to the editor. Thanks alsó go to Helen Glenn Court for cleaning up my lousy English and the "worser" English of all contributors. They have done wonderful work and I thank them for it. I alsó want to thank the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland for providing the resources, office space and release time for me to be editor.
