PREFACE
This book presents selected research results of a team of co-authors, who have worked together for several years, on subjects related to the Department of Futures Research of the Budapest University of Economics. The respective research activities were carried out in the framework of a project with the Ministry for Environmental Protection and Water Management (predecessor of the Ministry for Environment and Regional Policy) in the field of establishing a prognostic basis for environmental strategies. In the period of this research work (1986-1990), the objective of the activities was to aid the development of environmental strategies for Hungary. The purpose was to discover the conditions and aspects in which environmental management strategies would yield positive changes.
The research was dominated by theoretical-methodological means that, would also serve practical purposes. Efforts were made to relate the activities of various fields to the modeling work that formed the key element of the research. This latter activity yielded complex environmental models of a predictive character.
As a kind of advance - summary we may mention that the system of relationships between the environment and the economy was explored and described among others in a multidisciplinary model. Next the model was run with realistic data. One of the main conclusions drawn was that no independent environmental or economic development strategies can be worked out; that is any feasible development strategy must be based on consideration of the interrelationships of the economy and the environment.
