^^^^Hp Preface
From the time the authors conceived of this book until the time it was published, three years elapsed. During those years, many devoted and competent people contributed their ideas, time, and skills in an effort to improve the book. None gave more help than Dr. Raymond Sheele, of Hofstra College, and Mr. Howard Damon, of New York University. Their experience, scholarship, and imagination were invaluable to us during all stages of our testing and writing of the materials.
We also owe a considerable debt of gratitude to those teachers of English, who, throwing caution to the winds, were willing to test our material in their classes, and who were frank to tell us what was both right and wrong with the text. They are: Geoffrey Dwyer, Charles Gray, Julio Rodriguez, Arnold Spinner, and Charles Swen-son of Brentwood Junior High School, Brentwood, Long Island; Frank Asher, of Memorial Junior High School, Fairlawn, New Jersey; and Miss Moira Devine, of Scarsdale Junior High School, Scarsdale, New York.
Others who helped and encouraged us in various ways are Dr. Bernard Weiss, Curriculum Coordinator, Detroit Public School system; Professor James Gordon, University of Pennsylvania; Professor Priscilla Tyler, Harvard University; and Dr. Eugene Hoyt, Brentwood Junior High School. We wish also to express our gratitude to the New York State Department of Education which encouraged our testing of much of the material contained in the text.
Finally, we would like to thank all of the junior high school students who took part in a three-year educational adventure.
