With the November PASIC show serving as the annual pots & pans convention, our desire to "jump in" v^th our drum choices for 1990 has us marching to an earlier beat, so to speak. In years past, our long line of illustrious cover artists has run the stylistic gamut. From such greats as Jack DeJohnette, Art Blakey, and Peter Erskine to Charlie Watts and Bill Bruford, it isn't too difficult to see that our percussive palette offers a variety of musical possibilities. The combination of perennial DB Critics Poll winner and cover-storied Max Roach with Ginger Baker and Dave Weckl (likewise, a previous cover story) offers a cross section of styles and musical worlds like no other. Recent albums by Baker and Weckl (see "Reviews" Aug. '90 and Oct. '90, respectively) clearly demonstrate how drummer-led sessions can end up with widely (and wildly) divergent approaches to SUPER STAR saxophone mouthpieces "super power"chambers ^'DUKOFF HANDCRAFTED Roy Haynes: from Bird to Metheny arrangement, orchestration, and most importantly, rhythm. The musical worlds of jazz, fusion, world music, and rock & roll, to name but a few, can be found to varying degrees in the percussive proclivities of both Baker and Weckl. With Roach, whose most recent album is the very well-received series of duets with longtime colleague and friend Dizzy Gillespie, Paris 1989 (see "Reviews" May '90), the world of drums and drummers widens to include not only a variety within jazz, but elements of classical, folk, dance, blues, and poetry, in addition to Roach's ongoing love for composition. Elsewhere (and along with our regular features), you'll find pulsating profWes on Roy Haynes, ]ay Hoggard, Marilyn Mazur, Kenny Aronoff, Ignacio Berroa, and Carl Allen, along with a "Blindfold Test" on Steps Ahead's Mike Mainieri. Taken together, these percussive artists extend the discussion on diversity, vitality, and creativity within their various spheres of influence. In the spirit of our new credo, "]azz. Blues & Beyond," we hope you'll find that "giving the drummer some" can mean variety and not a few musical surprises. Yes, there can be great value in "marctmg to the beat of a different dnuraner," especially when it comes to music. Viva la differettce!
