Dürer to Dalí [antikvár]

Forcworc The prcscnc volume has been waiting for publication for over ten years. A significant portion of the text was prepared for the catalogue of the exhibition held in 1985: Leonardo to Van Cogh. Masler Drawings from Budapest. This exhibition of 100 drawings from the Szépművészeti Múzeum was shown in Washington (National Gallery oi Art), Chicago (The Art institute) and Los Angeles (County Museum ot Art). We would have liked to see a Hungarian edition of the catalogue, including the texts analyzing the drawings and the introduction discussing the history of the collection, but have not been able to realize our plans, not even in 1988, when Corvina Publishing House edited German and French versions, augmented by six additional drawings (Von Le'onardo bts Chagall; Die Schönsien Zeichnungen aus dew Museum der Bildenden Künste in Budapest; Les plus heaux dessins de Leonard ä Chagall). Albeit over recent decades the curators of the Museum's Department oi Graphic Arts have published numerous important catalogues abroad, domestic exhibitions from the collection were accompanied only by small catalogues with short texts, or brochure-type guides; until now there was no Hungarian publication containing luller explanations of the outstanding pieces of the collection. The two beautifully produced albums titled A raj^niives^et mesterei (Masters of the Art of Drawing; selected, respectively by Lajos Vayer and Dénes í^ataky) published in 1957 'ind 195 8 had only a brief introductory text and the technical data of the drawings reproduced in facsimile. The present volume includes 25 drawings in addition to the ones appearing in the 1985 American exhibitions and the 1988 Corvina publications. The old master drawings grouped into individual schools have been augmented by the addition of significant examples selected chiefly from the collection of nineteenth- and twentieth-century drawings. Most of the new material has been seen in exhibitions organized abroad in recent years: the German and Austrian drawings in the 1994 exhibition of Nineteenth-Century German, Austrian and Hungarian Drawings from Budapest, shown in Cleveland (The Cleveland Museum of Art), Berkeley (University Arc Museum) and Pittsburgh (The Frick Art Museum), the French drawings in the exhibition Zeichnen ist Sehen. Meisterwerke von Ingres bis Ce':^nne aus dem Museum der Bildenden Künste Budapest und aus Schweiler Sammlungen shown in 1996 in Bern (Kunstmuseum) and Hamburg (Kunsthalle). The texts taken from the abovementioned catalogues have been mostly unchanged save for the notation of the more recent literature; therefore in the present volume we have refrained from bibliographic references to the above exhibitions. Last but not least I would like to thank Karinthy Publishing House for the publication of this long-due volume, and tor the help of all those who made it financially possible. Teré^ Cers^i
