PREFACE ,r The first part of this book is the revised edition of "Teaching English to Hungárián Learners", first published in 1971. I have added a considerable amount of information to the story of English language learning and Anglo-Hungarian connections; supplemented teacher training and m-ethods and approaches with new developments; included the contrastive aspects of language learning into the chapter dealing with the learner, and reorganized the material related to the English lesson and its linguistic content. I have omitted the description of activities as these ar,e discussed in the secíond part which provides an all-embracing guide to methods, approaches and techniques. I feel that for all the alterations and "innovations" this manages to retain the spirit of the old "lecture no'tes" the governing ideas and principles of which were suggested by Éva Stephanides-Diósy, linguist and methodologist. I am indebted to colleagues at training schools for the opportunity they gave me for exchanging points of view about the lessons of student teachers and for their help and suggestions. I am grateful to young colleagues for their contribution with classroom teaching and their ideas discussed in seminars.
