The moment when the steering wheel turned by itself was as shocking and unnatural as that scene in 'The Exorcist' when the child's head rotates 180 degrees. It's something you feel in your stomach. After my initial response, the sensation of being driven by an AI was weird, marvellous and exciting, all at once." That's how our correspondent describes her first trip in a driverless car. The prototype (p42) looks like a transport 'pod' from science fiction, which is where driverless vehicles have been parked for well over a century That's all changing. Lawrie Jones looks at who's winning the driverless car race and where on p36. "Everybody is talking about autonomous driving" says TomTom's Willem Strijbosch. "It's going to happen even sooner than some expect. If you dream X years away then nobody will need to do their own driving any more, we won't have parking places in the cities, we won't have congestion, we don't lose time because we can work in the car The societal benefits are just enormous." Most people will experience this car of the future from the outside first. Autonomous cars are going to have to learn the rules of the road, which is not as straightforward as it first sounds. What is acceptable in one city may be considered outrageous in another. Car companies employ anthropologists to work out how their algorithms can adapt to these cultural differences (p46). Car crime has declined steadily over the last few decades thanks to technology but is on the rise again as thieves learn the technical tricks of the trade (p32). In a driverless future, cars wiU be one part of a complex networked system that includes traffic control such as variable speed limits and traffic lights as well as vehicle to vehicle communication (p64). That should help to keep everything moving and get everyone to their destinations faster but it presents a new security risk too (p54). Will cars of the future be any fun? Electric and hybrid cars are certainly getting faster and slicker (p28). Driverless cars could break completely with the accepted idea of how a car should look. We show you where car design could go in the future (p48) - personal and powerful or cool and convenient? You decide. It may be the glamorous interiors that provide the real fun anyway. What else will lose its drivers? First we'll get used to convoys of lorries trundling down our motorways at night and we'll soon be hopping onto driverless airport shuttles without a second thought. There's everything from city buses to ships. But bicycles? Really?
