Piazza del Duomo (Baptistry of San Giovanni; Giotto's Belltower; Loggia del Bigallo; Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore; Cathedral Museum) -Medici-Riccardi Palace (Medici Museum) - Piazza San Lorenzo (Church of San Lorenzo, Laurentian Library, Medici Chapels).
Piazza del Duomo - This huge square, together with the adjoining Piazza San Giovanni surrounding the Baptistry, is the heart of Florence. The religious monuments to be found here — the Cathedral, the Baptistry, and Giotto's Belltower — create splendid harmony with their pink, green, and white marbles and geometric designs. By the Baptistry's north door is the so-called Column of St. Zenobius, put up here in 1384. It commemorates the miracle performed by the saint (who was bishop of Florence around the 5th century); an elm tree burst into flower as his coffin was being carried by in mid winter. Here every year on Easter Sunday the "Scoppio del Carro" (Explosion of the Cart), a traditional Florentine event, is held.
