Many people selflessly offered their services and expertise to me as I was researching this book. I would like to thank Dr. Russell S. Gilmore of the Harbor Defense Museum of New York at Fort Hamilton, who gave me pertinent information on Forts Hamilton and Lafayette and who was kind enough to read the Prologue of this book and pronounce my hero's escape feasible. I also owe a great deal to Kathy Bills at the Western New York Landmark Society for her assistance in making the Rochester section of the book true to the time in which it is set.
