THE MAGIC OF GRANADAGeneral notions on GranadaIt is indeed true that a city owes is character to those who built it and lived within its walls. In Granada, the geographical situation, the climate and the surrounding country are the basic elements which during long centuries have imperceptibly moulded the lives of its inhabitants, and influenced their ways of living and building. For this reason, the visitor who comes to Granada should not expect to find archaeological ruins on all sides; rather will he find himself in a living atmosphere which is the delight of the soul and the senses. The Grenadine region consists of a coast which is everywhere accessible to Mediterranean invaders, and a mountain range from which such invaders can sucessfully defend themselves against counter attacks from the hinterland beyond. Thus, this world in miniature, from its Sierra the highest in all Spain descending to the fertile lands of the broad plain and the tropical richness of its coastal strip, has been the scene of the longest epochs of influence of each of the incoming civilizations.7
