c ; President's Message 45th Annual Meeting and Exposition 2003 Education Program Book The Education Sessions have become one of the highlights of the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology. The content of these sessions is summarized each year in the publication of Hematology, the ASH Education Program Book. These sessions are attended by overflowing crowds of attendees and serve as an effective way to update one's knowledge of modern hematology. This book is now referenced and citable through the National Library of Medicine and utilized as a source book by trainees as well as scientists and practitioners of the discipline of hematology. The book's contents are alsó available electronically on the ASH website at ww w. hemato 1 ogy. org. The efforts that culminate in these educational sessions and the publication of this book demonstrate somé of the best qualities of our society. Education is one of the core values of the Society, and this volume is one of our most visible vehicles to achieve this objective. The preparation for this book began almost immediately after last year's meeting in Philadelphia when the Education Co-chairs this year, Guido Tricot and Josef T. Prchal, began formulating a program that would be of interest to the diverse membership that composes our Society. Thanks to their energy and perseverance, they have been able to recruit somé of "the best and the brightest" to participate in this year's program. Their manuscripts cover subjects that have not been addressed during the last few meetings. Drs. Tricot and Prchal have invited a new cadre of educators to participate in the program. These efforts to encourage additional members of our society to participate in this highly visible and important activity reflects the aim of the Society's strategic plan to encourage greater participation of all members in the activities of the Society. These manuscripts were read carefully by not only the co-chairs but alsó by Virginia Broudy, our Executive Editor. The manuscripts were then sent out to external reviewers who made constructive criticisms of the manuscripts. Janine Bajus, our Assistant Editor, was instrumental in compiling all the components of this book into its final form. A magnificent peer-reviewed book is the result of this yearlong buzz of activity that enhances the knowledge of hematology for our members and the scientific and practicing community as a whole. The comprehensiveness and objectivity that characterizes this year's volume serves as a testimony to the vitality and scholarship that characterizes our society. One of the highlights of the book is the manuscript provided by Zhen-yi Wang of Shanghai entitled, "Treatment of Acute Leukemia by Inducing Differentiation and Apoptosis." Dr. Wang is the fírst Ham-Wasserman Lecturer who resides in Asia. His acceptance of our invitation to provide this lecture is emblematic of the international participation that makes the annual meeting such an exciting event. I would like to express my gratitude to all the contributors, the editors, and the reviewers as well as the staff of the Society who have all made important contributions to the creation of this volume. This synergistic interplay among these highly talented and altruistic individuals has resulted in an outstanding Education Book this year, which serves to advance the goals of the American Society of Hematology. I hope you all enjoy the city of San Diego and the meeting.
