Preface
Hollywood Royalty is based upon a series of interviews conducted by the author between 1985 and 1988 with two dozen of the greatest and most enduring movie stars. Each of these one-on-one conversations proved a remarkably open, personal, and in-depth discussion about the life and career of the subject, and most have been published in leading magazines and newspapers, quoted by top columnists, and syndicated globally by The New York Times.
In order to incorporate the actual words of a such a pantheon of living legends into a single book, the author returned to the twenty-four transcripts of his conversations with these luminaries and soon realized that, while each of the interviews was individually extraordinary, as a collection they offered an unprecedented perspective on the truth behind the image of those larger-than-life personalities whom we know as "The Hollywood Royals." Sadly, many of them are no longer with us, and indeed several of the participants in this work have recently died, making the contents of the book all the more precious and its publication all the more timely.
Since each interview was written and published as a verbatim conversation in question-and-answer format, and since all of them focused on Hollywood during the Studio Era, it followed that there should be a way to combine all of these intriguing conversations into one extended conversation—at a gathering, perhaps, of the last of the great screen idols, all of whom knew one another, as well as the other great stars.
