FOREWORD OF THE EDITOR
The International Hydrological Programme, as the continuation of the International Hydrological Decade (1965-74) was launched in 1975 by UNESCO with the objective of reinforcing co-operation in hydrology on a global scale. Hungary contributed effectively to the IHD as it was demonstrated by the publication of "Hungary and the International Hydrological Decade" (Budapest, 19 74) due to the keen interest in hydrology over more than one century, particularly due to the necessity of co-operation in the Danube Basin.
The Hungarian National Committee for IHP was founded under the auspices of the National Water Authority, a pre-cedessor of the recent Ministry of Environment and Water Management of the Hungarian Republic. The Secretariat of the Committee was located since 1965 in the headquarters of the Research Centre for Water Resources (VITUKI). The Committee comprises representatives of water management and related domains interested in hydrology and coordinates the efforts of the Hungarian water-oriented organizations related to IHP.
The major Hungarian contribution to IHP was the annual sixmonths International Post-Graduate Course for Hydrology organized by VITUKI and sponsored by UNESCO. Hungarian contribution includes the availability of several experts for IHP, among them the chairman of the IHP Intergovernmental council for one period.
The primary aim of the present publication is to comply with an international obligation to disseminate the major achievements of the last 15 years in a comprehensive, but brief volume, to make them accessible to the interested public and to indicate by the references attached the papers relevant to the various subjects.
