PREFACE This issue of the International Journal of Solids and Structures is dedicated to George Herrmann for his 70th birthday anniversary. It includes some of the 44 contributions by his former students, colleagues and associates which were presented either in an oral or poster format at an international symposium to honor George Herrmann that was held at the University of California, San Diego, in La Jolla, on 27-29 March 1991 under the joint sponsorship of the United States Department of Energy and the Center of Excellence for Advanced Materials of the University of California, San Diego.
