During the past 20 years, research has revitalized the study of cardio-vascular physiology. In this comprehensive yet highly readable textbook of modern cardiovascular physiology, Dr. Honig emphasizes new information Ow, from research on cell physiology, rheology, microcirculation, regulatio and, most important, transport. In conjunction with this new material, classical concepts are thoroughly presented, and the difficult topic of Piectrophysiology is treated in depth. Modern Cardiovascular Physiology, while primarily for first-year medical students, is designed for a wide spectrum of clinical users, and is pertinent for graduate students in physiology and bioengineering as well. Reflecting Dr. Honig's excellent teaching methods, Modern Cardiovascular Physiology takes a unified approach through two common themes —firstly, the concept of a factor of safety or reserve of function, and, secondly, the systems concept. These themes are introduced in an Over-view and are illustrated and applied throughout the text. Sections iden-tified by the heading Clinical Application follow certain passages to enable the student to immediately reinforce his or her grasp of the preceding material. For further study, Dr. Honig supplies a list of refer-ences after each chapter, and marks with an asterisk those of particular importance. The text is divided into five parts. The first two deal with the biophysical essentials. The third is concerned with microcirculation and transport, especially 02 transport. The fourth describes the special features of selected regional circulations, and the final part develops the regulation of pressure, flow, and volume and the integration of cardiovascular con-trols with voluntary behavior. Following each part is a set of problems designed to test the student's ability to apply information to practical situations. In successive problems, the student reassesses the same clinical protocol as he acquires a wider base of information, and builds on earlier answers to deal with additional aspects of each case. This problem-solving process creates an automatic review of the material. Numerous illustrations, figures, tables, and photo-micrographs reinforce the written text, and six appendixes contain needed data and guidance in problem-solving. Above all else, Modern Cardiovascular Physiology reflects the philosophy of its author, who believes "if you cannot use it, you do not really know it." Modern Cardiovascular Physiology makes a difficult subject accessible to first-year medical students, and illustrates its relevance to clinical medicine through practical, real-life problems and Clinical Applications; it is the ideal text for today's medical student.
