An Intolerable Myth

n January 27, 1920, the curtain fell on the last act of a liarrowing drama in which illness and despair had played the leading roles. In the cold morning, a long cortege of friends and artists from Montparnasse and Montmartre accompanied the remains of Amedeo Modigliani across Paris to the Pcrc-Lachaise cemetery. The artist had succumbed to tuberculous meningitis at ten minutes to eleven on the night of January 24, at the Hôpital de la Charité, where the dying man had been brought two days earlier by Ortiz de Zarate and Kisling.
