THE LITTLE TIPE
William was a boy, not very old, who lived in Ireland. The house he lived in he had been born in, and so had his father, and his father's people for many a long year back. It was a thin house and a tall one ; there was one part of it that was round, on account of having once been part of a castle built by the English. This round tower was not much used, except to keep tools in, and sometimes fowls, but it gave William a good feeling, as though he had that much part in a fairy tale. For fairy tales are full of castles, doing or containing surprising things ; sinking into lakes and rising at the bidding of a song, disappearing, flying, and having within their walls sleeping giants, princesses, and knights with spurs of yellow gold. William had an idea that his own castle might one day wake to some such life and show them a taste of its quality. Sure enough, one day something did happen, though it did not seem like magic to begin with.
William's father had bought a mowing machine at an auction, and it came home on the first of May. There was nowhere but the tower for it to
