Preface There are many admirable textbooks concerned with the restoration of the partially edentulous mouth but few which seek to set down in a succinct fashion the objectives of each clinical stage followed by an illustrated narrative of the clinical and laboratory stages of partial denture construction. We have attempted to fill this gap in prosthetic literature and hope that we may have dispelled somé of the mysticism which so often surrounds this subject. Despite the enormous variety of permutations of edentulous spaces (Cummer has calculated the possible number at 131 068), of tooth alignment and occlusal relationships, the restoration of the partially edentulous mouth depends upon the understanding of relatively few fundamental principles which have been enumerated in the text. Although written primarily for undergraduate students, it is hoped that many practitioners will find it a valuable aid to their postgraduate studies. We are particularly indebted to Mr John Glaysher who, in addition to carrying out most of the technical procedures, has alsó been responsible for nearly all of the photographs illustrating the text. We are alsó grateful to the staff of the Department of Dental Photography of Guy's Hospitál Dental School for their help. Finally, we wish to express our appreciation to our secretaries for their painstaking preparation of the manuscript and to our wives for typing and proof reading. London 1983 D.J.Neill J.D. Waltér
