Canadian Concerns and Expectations for Peace Douglas Ray Canadians value peace both at home and abroad, so they temper rheir many other interests accordinglv. Brian Mulroney captured this interest by his leadership at the United Nations and in Commonwealth discussions. The 'peace mission' by Pierre Trudeau similarly added several points to his popularity scale. The Canadian Centre for Arms Control and Disarmament has bipartisan support, and Joe Clark has indicated that peace will continue to be a priority. This official stance is matched by a popular interest in several topics linked to peace and security including: (1) the correct international tilt, balancing friendship for the U.S.A. with sensitivity to the ideas of developing nations and cordial relations with the communist community; (2) attention to promotion of justice and development instead of mere suppression of violence; (3) personal involvement in various organizations that are independent of (and may either complement or counter) national programs; (4) substantial peace and disarmament discussions, including background reports in the média; and (5) increasing awareness of the interaction between priváté sector activities and international relations.
