In this text, Thucydides epitomizes the very idea of the Athenean democracy through the words of the first man of Athens, Pericles. Athenean democracy as exemplified in this text is the regime, to which our contemporary world aspires regarding its archetypical institutions and political aim.The present edition combines the original Greek text with Eleftherios Venizelos' outstanding translation into modern Greek, as well as with the French and the English translations provided by prominent classicists, namely Jacqueline de Romilly and C.F.
