Sir John Harvey-Jones (1924-2008) was Britain's best-known and admired businessman.
His achievements as chairman of ICI were legendary, where, under his leadership, the giant organization turned a loss of L200 million into L1 billion profit in just 30 months.
For three years running he came top in a 'captains of British industry' award, and he shot to fame as the star of the BAFTA award-winning BBC television series Troubleshooter which ran between 1990 and 2000. This was the first television 'reality' business programme and paved the way for more recent ones. The author of several books, including the number-one bestseller Making It Happen, in his later years he was one of the country's foremost business speakers.
