Foreword
Allow me to introduce the Austrian ceramic artist Roswitha Geyer. She emerged as a fully fledged, technically able artist not in the usual way, but by self-education after finishing a success-ful career of a different kind. Her works are imbued with such strong intellectual, spiritual and technical excellence that we sense long years of experience behind them although she started only to work with ceramics in the recent past. For almost 25 years she was a successful fashion designer and the managing director of an international fashion company doing business in the Far East. After giving up this activity, she was able to devote herself to her old dream of art and ceramics. The fact that her parents did not allow her to attend art school spurred her talent, which burst forth like a geyser from beneath the crust of the earth.
Following the first faltering endeavours of these belated years of study, the works published in this catalogue were finally created.
It is incredible that ceramic poetry could be conjured from ordinary, everyday letters. Individual letters seem to be mere symbols but while looking at these ceramic letters we suddenly realize that they have another role as well. Their ordinary, rigid shapes are metamorphosed into beautifully outlined, organic spatial forms by her creative hands although we can still recognize their origin. The beauty of their form and material is captivating. The sculptor's message ripens from the choice of material to the final high firing, from abstract, prosaic letters into pulsating spatial manifestations. I am glad that Roswitha Geyer is presenting her works in Hungary and firmly believe that before long Austria will be proud of her.
