Bővebb ismertető
R-eface to the First Edition Practical English is a comprehensive series designed to teach English as a second or a foreign language. Students who use Practical English will learn all four language skills-listening, speaking, reading, and writing-from the beginning. In book 1 the emphasis is on oral communication; books 2 and 3 give increased attention to reading and writing. Supplementary materials include workbooks and tape cassettes for additional writing and listening practice, and instructor's manuals containing useful teaching suggestions and answers to all text and workbook exercises. In writing Practical English our overriding concern has been to create material that is appropriate for aduit and secondary-school students. This has been accomplished by using a broad rangé of characters and real-life situations to teach the language. The grammar is presented in a way that takes advantage of the greater maturity and reasoning power of students at the aduit and secondary levels. Structural items are demonstrated, rather than taught in the form of rules to be memorized. Students are encouraged to form their own conclusions based on the examples given. The idea is to get the students involved in a creative learning process that enables them to develop their grammatical intuition. There is no question that mature students need a sound working knowledge of grammar if they are to be confident and creative in using their new language. However, it is not enough to master the grammatical structures of English. Students must be able to relate the language to their own personal needs and interests. For this reason, Practical English includes a number of open-ended exercises that allow for free expression. The free-response questions in the first book give students the opportunity to talk about themselves using simple, straightforward English. Once they have progressed beyond the elementary level they are ready for more creative language practice. In books 2 and 3, each chapter has a special sectiön called "One Step Further" with discussion topics such as sports, hobbies, music, cinema, travel, dating and marriage. Ideas for sketches have been provided to give additional opportunities for free expression. The generál themes are familiar to students, as they are drawn from the dialogues and stories in the text.
