PREFACE This monograph has been based on thirty years' clinical and experimentál research. The majority of the chapters are the outcome of joint work by both of us, while the rest has been based on separate urological and nephrological studies. In the past decades the considerable results attained in the research of renal pathology in generál, and pyelonephritis in particular, have been furnished by both urology and internál medicine. This is why our partnership, that of a nephrologist and a urologist, seems to be ideál. We started to deal with the problem of pyelonephritis when we had succeeded in demonstrating, by histological means, the lymphatic system of the kidney. These findings had then prompted the revision of the theory of the "lymphogenic" pathogenesis of pyelonephritis. At the same time, we obtained fresh data on the anatomy, physiology, pathology and pathophysiology of the renal calycopelvic system. Ali these provided a sound basis for the clinical studies that followed. A synthesis of theoretical and practical aspects has been attempted in the present work in which both clinical and experimentál data are presented. The Authors
