Introduction
This book is a collection of over 4500 quotations selected for their succinctness, aptness and wit. The quotations have been classified into about 600 thematic headings. These are major topics, such as life, death, love, war, etc. The themes are arranged in alphabetical order.
Under each thematic heading, the quotations are listed in alphabetical order by author. The source of the quotations is given, together with any explanatory note that may be required.
The thematic arrangement is idéal for seeking an apt quo-tation about a particular topic. It also produces an interesting and amusing collection through which to browse.
In addition, the book can be used to locate known or half-remembered quotations. There are two indexes. There is an index based on key words in the quotations, directing the user to the theme under which the quotation appears. The num-bers in the index are the quotation numbers, which indicate where the quotation appears within a theme. There is also a name index that provides references to quotations by given : author s. Again the reference is to the theme and.the quotation jnumber.
