Bővebb ismertető
Björn Waldegârd, 1989 When 1 started rallying in 1962 in my Volkswagen Beetle, it had 55 or 60 bhp and for a year or two, that seemed to be enough. Things hove changed a lot since then and I followed the sport all the way through driving rally cors with up to 600 bhp and then bock down to 300 bhp. A lot of works teams were prepared to let me drive their cars, from Porsche, to Lancia, Ford, BMW, Fiat and Toyota, amongst others. Sometimes people wonder why someone like me is still involved in the sport, even though I am not a professional driver any more, but if you have started in something like motorsport, you do not give it up overnight. It becomes part of you. I think that story about power outputs gives an idea of how much the sport has changed over the past 35 years. Maybe 1 do not agree with all the changes. Certainly, 1 am happy to have been involved in those days when rallies were very long. As a driver, I think I would prefer those long events to the three day World Championship rallies we have now, which are nearly all in daylight. But change is good, because otherwise things go stole. Rallying is so much more professional than it was when I started and we have to accept that for o sport that needs media coverage, that is the way to go. It is good that todoy's rally drivers get so much recognition for their skills. 1 am glad to have been part of the sport at a time when it developed so fast, but I am happy also that its history is now recognised. If you hove had a long and successful career, you come to a point where you admit that you connot win at the top level any more, but that does not mean that you have to stop driving. 1 still get a lot of fun from driving historic cars and while you may not get paid for doing so, there is good competition and it is nice not to have any pressure. I still find it fascinoting. This sport will follow me to my grave. I will be happy to drive any car so long os I can still sit! I hope this book explains to you part of rallying's appeal.
