Guide to the Dictionary
Random House Webster's English Learner's Dictionary is intended for learners of English as a second or foreign language. Definitions have been written in a clear and simple style that is easy for a beginner to understand.

A different form that applies to only one definition is placed after the definition number. These different forms are introduced by the words "or," "also," or "Also called."
Single-word entries have centered dots to show where the word can be divided into syllables. This is a guide to where to add a hyphen (-) at the end of a line. In main entries composed of two or more words, individual words are not usually divided into syl-
