COHESION POLICY The objective of the régiónál aid policy, or in other words the - economic, social and régiónál - cohesion policy is to reduce the existing régiónál differences with regards to development and living standards within the European Union. In compliance with the principle "United in diversity", the European Union is not aiming to eliminate régiónál differences, but to reduce the disparities arising from these, and to improve the competitiveness of the more disadvantaged regions by means of development projects, and through this to reduce the existing income differences, diminishing or even eliminating the permanent backwardness. The regions realise three objectives of the European Régiónál Development Fund, the European Social Fund and the Cohesion Fund: 1.Convergence objective: supports backward regions that are struggling with the most serious levels of unemployment, production, income and infrastructure difficulties, and where the GDP per capita is less than 75% of the community average. 2.Régiónál competitiveness and employment objective: aims at strengthening competitiveness and attractiveness, and to improve the employment rates of the regions that are not subject to the convergence objective, 3.European territorial cooperation objective: targets the development of cross-border cooperation through joint local and régiónál initiatives. This objective provides non-region-specific support. Objectives Convergence Régiónál competitiveness and employment European territorial cooperation From among the seven statistical regions of Hungary six (Western Transdanubia, Central Transdanubia, Southern Transdanubia, Northern Hungary, Northern Great Plain, Southern Great Plain) belong to the convergence, while one (Central Hungary) belongs to the phasing-in regions "competitiveness and employment" objective. (The "phasing-in regions" are the regions that receive special financial allocation due to their former status being covered by the previous Objective 1) Funds ERDF jmg ERDFESF i"3 fl^l ERDF
