Chapter 1Lisa Enright lifted her eyes to the big clock that sat over the double doors of the Gresswell High auditorium. Her boyfriend Skip was going to be late. After fourth period, he had told Lisa that he needed to go to his car to pick up his notes before debating-team tryouts. Soon the bell would ring for fifth period, the time set aside every Friday for extracurricular activities. The end of September always brought the first meetings of the debating team. Skip was going to blow his chances by being late.Lisa nervously brushed back her short-cropped black hair. She watched as the big hand on the clock drew closer to the top of the hour. Glancing back down the hall, she saw Mr. Ferris's corduroy blazer. John Ferris was the speech teacher and faculty adviser to the debating team. He was the final judge of who did or did not join the debating team.Ferris brushed past Lisa and entered the auditorium. He had a reputation for being tough.
