PREFACE
In this selection from The Idylls of the King I have tried to make the Notes as comprehensive as possible. The pupil's attention is drawn to essential qualities of style, treatment of character, and method of handling the story.
In the Introduction will be found sections dealing with Tennyson's life and work based on A Memoir by Hallam, Lord Tennyson. I have added, too, some account of the iVllegory and a Study of Tennyson's Blank Verse. In addition, there is a summary and some critical survey of each Idyll, which, it is hoped, will set the pupil on the right road to his own appreciation of the poem.
I have throughout confined myself almost entirely to The Idylls and have deliberately not attempted a wider survey of Tennyson's complete work, as this must come elsewhere, in a representative selection of his poems.
This edition is published by arrangement with Messrs Macmillan & Co. Ltd.
