PREFACIEN planning this book we have selected certain major educational topics and problems and attempted to analyze them from a sociological point of view. The task has been somewhat parallel to the organization of a book in educational psychology, in which the author draws from the science of psychology those concepts that are of most use in helping the teacher to understand the individual as a learner. Our task was to draw upon the science of sociology and social anthropology for material that would help the reader to understand how the individual becomes a co-operating member of a complex society. In this connection, we view the school as one of many social systems that operate in a complex social structure. In attending to certain topics in the field of sociology and omit-ting others, we have been guided by our own experiences as research workers and teachers in the social sciences as well as by what we feel will be of greatest use to classroom teachers and other readers.
