In view of the population-growth, social development a growing demand for food and to increase food exports we have to realize that we can only meet these growing needs if we cen harvest more and better food from a certain area* But the demsmd for water and especially for good quality drinking water grows in this very are a* More food oan only he seoured by larger crops and more fertilizers. The growing need for drinking water requires the collection of water from even bigger areas This involves the ground water reserves of oultivated areas* Thus the very same areas are effected by plant-cultivation and water produotion. In areas with low population density agricultural cultivation is prohibited where water is collected to prevent fertilizers from getting the water* However this method cannot be used in countries that have ne uncultivated lands and land reserves since all areas have to be oultivated to meet the demands arising from the growth of population* The objective of our survey is to collect data about themotion of fertilizers in the soil and to determine their potential danger for the water quality of ground water wells. Places and methods of the survey Two areas conneoted in the water supply of Budapest were selected in cooperation with the Budapest Water Comp&nys Csepel and Szentendre Islands. Both iel&nds. Both ialands are situated in an area that produces most of the vegetables and they, toof are used for agrioultural production The surface of the islands is plain, a bit wavy at somé places* thus surface outflow and erosion cannot be expected. Surface movement of nutritive materials cen alsó be ignored. The methods have been used in the survey. For several years,4-5 times a year, soil samples that reach the groundwater have been
