PREFACE
The Jewish people wandered through many lands and suffered many hardships. Sometimes the only precious possession they carried with them was a sense of humor.
They told stories—some with a philosophical saltiness; some subtle; some reached a ridiculous height, or a pathetic low. But they laughed. Perhaps this ability to laugh, mainly at themselves, helped them to endure.
In this book, I have compiled my favorite Yiddish stories . . . some old, some new, some original and some even true.
HAVE A LAUGH!
